Multiplayer Alexa Games: What to Play Together on Game Night
By Josh6 min read
A smart speaker sits in the middle of the room, everyone can hear it and anyone can shout at it. That makes Alexa a natural host for family game night. But "multiplayer" means different things in different Alexa games, and plenty of lists call a game multiplayer when it really isn't.
So we've split this one honestly. First, games that properly support more than one player, and how. Then the single-player games that turn into great group games when everyone helps out.
Alexa Games With Real Multiplayer Modes
Each of these lets two or more people play against each other, according to the game itself or its Amazon listing.
Blob Battle (2 Players, Echo Show)
Blob Battle is the two-player game in Mini Games. At the start Alexa asks "One or two players?". Say two, and you and a friend take turns on the same Echo Show: choose a blob, then say a square, like "top left" or "middle". Bigger blobs can swallow smaller ones, even in a square that's already taken, so it's all about saving your big blobs for the right moment. Play alone and you face the computer on easy, medium or hard.
Blob Battle needs an Echo Show. Say "Alexa, open Blob Battle".
Song Quiz
Song Quiz, made by Volley, plays a clip and you name the song and the artist, with playlists from the 60s to the 2010s. Its Amazon listing says you can challenge friends and family in live competitions, or go head to head with music fans across the country. Say "Alexa, open Song Quiz".
Pointless
The official Pointless skill, made by Vocala, asks you for the correct answers that the fewest of 100 people gave. Its Pointless Premium subscription adds a multiplayer mode for up to four friends, where you take turns to answer and the lowest score wins the Pointless trophy. Everyone can play the free Daily Quiz. Say "Alexa, open Pointless".
Wheel of Fortune (US Only)
Wheel of Fortune from Volley has a local Party Game for you and up to three friends or family, where you play like real contestants and see who makes it to the Bonus Round. It's designed for Echo Show and is only in the US store. Say "Alexa, play Wheel of Fortune".
Beat the Intro
Beat the Intro, made by Musicplode, is a music quiz with a Team Mode: choose "with friends" when you set up a game, split into two teams and take turns guessing the song and artist as fast as you can. It has more than 6,000 ratings on Amazon UK. Say "Alexa, open Beat the Intro".
Bingo (US Store)
The Bingo skill from LME Skills turns Alexa into your bingo caller. Everyone needs their own bingo card, then you say "Next" for each number and "Bingo!" when someone wins. It's a lovely one for grandparents' visits. It's in the US store. Say "Alexa, open Bingo".
Single-Player Games That Are Better With a Crowd
These games have one player, but they're built around listening, guessing and deciding, which is exactly what a room full of people loves arguing about. One person does the talking and everybody else chips in.
The Werewolf
A werewolf is loose in the village, and in The Werewolf you hear from the Mayor, the Baker, the Butcher, the Farmer, the Barmaid, the Fisherman, the Beggar and the Blacksmith. Listen to every alibi together, take a vote on who's lying, and let one person make the accusation. It's a lot like the TV show The Traitors, which is why we wrote a whole post about it. Say "Alexa, open The Werewolf".
Hotel Detective
A scream rings out in the hotel. In Hotel Detective you listen to the clues, question the guests and work out which room it came from. Give everyone a different suspect to keep an eye on, then compare notes before you guess. Say "Alexa, open Hotel Detective".
Decision Time and Dad Joke Duel
Decision Time asks would-you-rather questions, like flying or being invisible, and shows how your answer compares with the rest of the world. Dad Joke Duel tells a dad joke and asks whether it's funny or painful, then tells you what everyone else said. Both work brilliantly as a room vote: take a show of hands, give Alexa the winning answer and see if your family agrees with the world. Say "Alexa, open Decision Time" or "Alexa, open Dad Joke Duel".
Zombie Racing and Reindeer Racing
Pure luck, which makes them perfect for a sweepstake. Before the race starts, everyone backs a different runner in Zombie Racing or Reindeer Racing, the player gives Alexa the family's pick, and whoever backed the winner chooses the next game. Say "Alexa, open Zombie Racing".
Quiz Games and the TV Quiz Shows
Quiz Games has 490 multiple choice quizzes in 15 categories, and every question has three options, so the whole room can shout their answer and the quizmaster decides. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, Tenable and Jeopardy! are single-player too, but they make a fine team round. Our pub quiz post has more ideas for running a quiz night.
Escape the Mansion
Two heads are better than one when you're locked in a haunted house. In Escape the Mansion you search each room, find useful things and put them together, while Jinx the sarcastic cat drops hints. Let the youngest do the talking and everyone else hunt for ideas. Say "Alexa, ask Mini Games to play Escape the Mansion".
Big Fart and Happy Birthday
Not games, but party favourites. Big Fart has a fart countdown for surprising a friend, and Happy Birthday can count down for up to 40 minutes, then sing to the birthday person by name just as they walk in.
Tips for an Alexa Game Night
- Pick a quizmaster. Alexa can only hear one answer at a time, so choose one person to speak for the room.
- Mix it up. Alternate a quick luck game with a longer mystery or quiz, so nobody's waiting too long for their favourite.
- Use an Echo Show if you have one. Blob Battle and Wheel of Fortune need one, and every game is easier to follow when everyone can see the pictures.
- Keep score on paper. For the single-player games, take turns and write down who did best.
Mini Games is free to enable, and free players can play up to 10 games a day. For a long game night, Unlimited Mini Games removes the daily limits.
