Potion Class: Can You Catch the Spy Before the Grand Potion Goes BOOM?
By Josh4 min read
The Headmistress has a problem. "A spy from Grimwood Academy is ruining my potions." One of your four classmates is secretly working for the rival school, and as her best student, it's up to you to catch them.
That's Potion Class, a spy-catching game in Mini Games for Alexa. It joined the collection on 7 October 2026, alongside Royal Bluff and Snowball Fight (here's everything else that's new), and it's a proper little mystery: three potions, four suspects and one toad who is never wrong.
Meet the Class
- The Headmistress: runs the lesson and keeps track of every BOOM. Her idea of encouragement: "Try not to explode."
- Red: bossy and always after the spoon. "Best stirrer in the school. Obviously."
- Blue: shy, and sorry about absolutely everything.
- Green: the class joker, never without a rubber chicken.
- Yellow: "I've read every potion book in the library. Twice."
- The Truth Toad: the class pet, with a nose that can sniff out the spy.
Any of the four classmates could be the spy, and it's usually someone different from last time. They remember you, too: lock up the wrong one and you'll hear about it next lesson.
How a Lesson Plays Out
Each lesson has three potions, drawn from a recipe book of 20, from the Giggling Draught to the Jelly Juice. For each one you pick two classmates to help you brew: say two colours, like "Red and Blue", or tap two of them on an Echo Show.
Then the cauldron bubbles ("Nobody lick the spoon."). A perfect potion earns you a star, plus some lovely chaos, like the whole class floating up to the ceiling. A ruined one goes BOOM: the Headmistress might grow a long purple beard, or it might start raining frogs.
After the second potion you're offered the Truth Toad, once per lesson. After the third, you lock one classmate in the broom cupboard, and the other three brew the Grand Potion of Golden Glory.
How to Work Out Who the Spy Is
When the spy helps brew, they can slip in something rotten and make the potion go BOOM. So if a potion blows up, one of those two helpers might be the spy. Might, because one innocent classmate in every lesson is just clumsy, and their potions can go BOOM too. And don't expect a confession: after every BOOM, the two helpers argue about whose fault it was.
The Headmistress helps. From the second potion on, she sums up the clues before you choose, and when a second potion blows up, she points out anyone who was there both times. On an Echo Show each classmate's record also sits under their name: a star for every perfect potion they helped with, a BOOM for every ruined one.
Then there's the toad. Name a classmate and it hops over to sniff their hands. A croak means they're the spy, and a happy ribbit means they're clean. The toad is never wrong, which makes it the best clue in the game.
Tips for Catching the Spy
- Use the Truth Toad. Sniff your top suspect: a croak solves the case, and a ribbit crosses a name off your list. Say no and it might sulk: "The toad stays in its box. It looks offended."
- Don't convict on one BOOM. It could be the clumsy classmate. Look for whoever was there every time.
- A perfect potion isn't proof. The spy doesn't strike every time, especially once they've already ruined one.
- Test your suspects. Pair a suspect with someone from a perfect potion. Once you're sure, keep the spy away from the cauldron and save your stars.
- Lost track? Say "clues" and the Headmistress goes through them again.
What You Win
Lock up the right classmate and the Grand Potion sparkles, the spy is unmasked and you win 20 coins. You also keep a star for every perfect potion, and three stars plus the spy makes you top of the class.
Get it wrong and the Grand Potion blows up, turning the Headmistress into a frog. The real spy gloats, the classmate you locked up protests their innocence, and you get 5 coins for trying, plus a tip for next time.
Every spy you catch also counts towards your rank: Apprentice after your first catch, then Spellcaster after three, Prefect after six and Head Wizard after ten.
How to Play Potion Class
- Say "Alexa, open Mini Games".
- Pick your team if it's your first time.
- Say "play Potion Class".
- Say "play" to start or "rules" to hear how it works, then pick your helpers by colour.
Or jump straight in with "Alexa, open Potion Class".
You don't need a screen: on a speaker like an Echo Dot you play by voice, and the Headmistress names the classmates whenever you pick. On an Echo Show you can also watch the classroom and tap your answers.
Mini Games is free to enable, and free players can play up to 10 games a day. For more, there's Unlimited Mini Games.
