Zombie Racing: Which Zombie Will Reach the Brains First?

Zombie Racing: Which Zombie Will Reach the Brains First?

By Josh4 min read

Halloween is almost here, and the zombies are warming up. In Zombie Racing, four of them stagger round a running track in the middle of a graveyard, racing for the brains at the finish line. Your job is to pick the one you think will win.

You don't race yourself. Play on a speaker for the first time and Alexa explains why: you're not a zombie ("Well, at least I don't think you are"). So you back a racer instead, and if it crosses the line first, you win zombie boogers. Yes, really.

How a Zombie Race Works

Every race has four zombies, and each one shows what it pays if it wins: 2, 5, 5 or 10 zombie boogers. On a speaker, Alexa reads out the four names and their prizes. On an Echo Show they appear as cards, with the prize in big yellow letters. The prizes move around from race to race, so Granny won't always be the 10.

Zombie Racing on an Echo Show: the Choose Your Zombie screen with Hairy Harold (win 2), Billy The Blob (win 5), Iris The Infected (win 5) and Granny The Gutmuncher (win 10), above the player's 22 zombie boogers and 164th place on the leaderboard

Say the name of your zombie, or tap its card on an Echo Show. The first part of the name is enough, so "Granny" will do. Then they're off, with race commentary, music and lines for every zombie on the track.

Once your zombie is racing, there's nothing to do but cheer. On the screen, the four shuffle forward at random, and a number beside each lane shows its place. Three times during the race, the zombie at the back drops out. The last one left crosses the chequered finish line and takes the win.

On a speaker, the winner is drawn as the race starts, and the prizes work like the odds at a real race: the zombie paying 2 boogers wins most often, while the one paying 10 is the long shot. Play it safe or chase the big prize: it's up to you.

What You Win

When the last zombie standing crosses the line, it's results time (on an Echo Show you see the whole finishing order). Back the winner and you win the number of boogers on its card.

Every booger counts, because your total goes on the all-time "oogie boogie zombie boogers leaderboard", as Alexa calls it. On a speaker, she tells you your position after every race. On an Echo Show, the Leaderboard button shows the top 10 racers, with your own rank and booger total underneath.

There are coins for your team too. On an Echo Show, every race earns them wherever your zombie finishes: 15 for first, 5 for second, 2 for third and 1 for last. On a speaker, a winning pick earns coins as well as boogers.

Meet the Zombies

You start with four racers and unlock four more as your booger total grows. Once a zombie is unlocked, it can turn up in any race.

  • Bobby The Biter: blue, bug-eyed and dressed in a torn shirt and brown shorts. One of the four starters.
  • Iris The Infected: a green-skinned starter with a ponytail and a ragged skirt.
  • Scabby The Sickly: races in a cap and overalls, mop and bucket in hand.
  • Granny The Gutmuncher: hair in a bun and walking frame at the ready. Never write off Granny.
  • Billy The Blob: big, pink and wobbly. Joins the line-up after your first win.
  • Hairy Harold: shaggy fur and glowing yellow eyes. Unlocked at 11 boogers.
  • Salivating Sophie: wild curly hair and a steady drip of drool. Unlocked at 35 boogers.
  • Headless Chicken: a scruffy zombie chicken, and the last to unlock, at 70 boogers. Get there and Alexa starts with "Holy moly!"

On an Echo Show or a Speaker

Zombie Racing works on both. On an Echo Show you watch the race and can tap your zombie's card. On an Echo Dot or any other speaker, Alexa reads out the line-up and you follow the race by ear, and a win ends with a zombie song to celebrate.

It's a good one for a Halloween get-together: let everyone back a different zombie, agree on the official pick, then shout your favourite over the finish line.

How to Play Zombie Racing
